A Race With Time At Denaby.

‘Father Time’ had a good deal to do with the failure of the Denaby team to annex a couple of points as a result of their meeting with Hickleton Main at Denaby. The game was interesting, having regard to the fact that these teams, along with South Kirkby, are generally favoured as strong aspirants for the championship of the Mexborough league. Batting first, Denaby simply collared the Hickleton bowling, Overton, who secured five wickets for 54, being the only man who was treated with respect. The home score of 200 for seven was largely based upon the exhilarating partnership of Luther Robinson and Narroway, who hot ‘bloomin’ hard and bloomin’ often.’ We are beginning to regard big scores from Luther Robinson as inevitables, but his latest innings was complied in the Denaby crack’s best style.

Arthur Robinson and the two Smiths also played well for their runs. Then commenced the race with time and owing to a fine bowling spell, Williamson, Alwyn Turner, and Daykin were cheaply dismissed. Naturally, at this stage of the game, the spectators were jubilant, and made no secret of the fact. However, Hickleton Main are blessed with a ‘tail’ which is not a ‘tail,’ and Arnold and Symester for a time successfully resisted the attack, and then, when a separation was effected, and as wickets fell at more or less regular intervals, reasonable hope was renewed that Denaby would claim the maximum points. However, the excellent partnership of Overton and Eyre speedily dispelled the home prospects, and when time arrived the Hickleton men had two wickets in hand. Luther Robinson had followed up his fine batting display with some excellent bowling, taking four wickets for 26, while Arthur Robinson and Scott bowled very steadily.
