Denaby Foiled By Time
A perfect batting wicket at Tickhill Square yielded over 400 runs, and an entertaining afternoon’s cricket, reaching a totally unexpected climax, terminated in thrilling style.
Firbeck opened confidently, and the hard wicket revealed a grave weakness in Denaby’s attack. They were lucky to capture Larke’s wicket very early in the game, but the later batsmen were in merry vein, and against bowling that was not always accurate in length, runs came easily. Rodgers played a careful, but by no means laboured innings for his 89 and Allenson seemed set when he had the misfortune to be run out.
Denaby opened very warily, providing an entire change of tactics from those of the lively Firbeck, who bad bees inclined to force the pace. But it was Tibbles again who handed Denaby what might have been the key to success. The Denaby skipper played a delightful innings for 80, and gave few chances. Greenwood. was quite as forceful, but not so fortunate. An exciting finish was witnessed, when Denaby were within 20 of victory, and three overs remained. ‘Brighter cricket,’ was indeed seen at its best.
