Denaby “Diddled.'”

Checkmated By Rossington.

Denaby received a shock on Saturday when after putting up a good score for the loss of nine wickets, they saw Rossington rub them off for the loss of only three wickets. The game had many interesting points. Greenwood and Tibbles made their best opening partnership of the season, 99 being put on the board before Tibbles was stumped by Coates. Tibbles scored at twice the rate of Greenwood who went on to make his highest score so far- 49 in 1 ½ hours. Against a continued change of bowlers, the following Denaby batsmen scored steadily. Denaby were at the wickets about two and quarter hours for 245 for 9 when Higgins called the last batsmen in. Of the Rossington bowlers only Pickup had anything like success, taking 3 for 57.

Rossington were just under two hours in knocking off Denaby’s total. Jebson and Widdowson were a breezy opening pair and in less than an hour had scored 101 when Widdowson was well taken by Higgins. In scoring 110, Jebson never gave a chance and the score stood at 242 for two when he played a bad ball from D. Probert, the ball rebounding off his bat on to the wickets. It was a foolish mistake. Peatfield, who carried out his bat for 66, had ably assisted Jebson scoring rapidly. Both he and Jebson sent the ball to the boundary on numerous occasions and once—as did Greenwood, Tibbles, D. Probert and Higgins—sent the ball out of the field.

The total runs was the highest put up on the ground this season, but could have been lowered by keener fielding on both sides. Scores:—
