Greenwood’s Fine Innings
Denaby and Cadeby 248 for 7 v Rotherham Town 91
Denaby and Cadeby, playing their second home match in the Yorkshire Council on Saturday, scored a meritorious victory over Rotherham town.
The weather was ideal, the cricket interesting, exciting at times and the crowd nothing if not enthusiastic.
Denaby ran up 243 with the loss of seven wickets, and then declared, leaving themselves about two hours in which to dismiss Rotherham. They did it in little more than an hour, although it seems probable at one time that they might be given a run for their money, Worthington, however, was in fine form, and although 49 runs had been scored before the fall of the first wicket, the whole side were out for less than twice a total.
The match was notable for a fine innings of 107 contributed to the Denaby total by Irving Greenwood who opened the innings with Tibbles. He gave only one real chance, having a life at 16 when he was missed by Poulton in the slips. In the words of an onlooker it would have been good if he had got it for the ball went out to the boundary. After reaching 50 in an hour and 25 minutes, Greenwood had a rather reckless period, during which he went out to meet all sorts of balls. He survived that however, and carried out his bat. He is a first player to have the distinction of scoring a century in local cricket this season.
33 runs were on the board before the fall of the first Denaby wicket, Tibble being then LBW to a ball from Tyler Wainwright, who joined Greenwood at the wicket. He had a brief stay being caught by Bentley at second slip with only four runs added. A first change in the bowling was tried at 38, Bentley going in for Rawlin.when there was a curious incident just after the half century had been passed. Would Ward, at mid on attempting to catch a ball from Worthington, but merely succeeded in deflecting it from its course, it slipped across and broke the wicket. Greenwood, fortunately had not started to run,or would be ran out.
Another change in the bowling was tried at 62, Poulton coming on for Tyler, who at this point had two wickets for 17 runs in 10 overs. Worthington and Greenwood brought the total up to 87, scoring 50 in 40 minutes. Five minutes later Greenwood reached his 50.
The attack was changed again at 97, and the hundred went up after an hour and 20 minutes cricket. Rawlin wrought havoc with the Denaby men soon afterwards, he took three wickets in one over. Narrow way whose partnership with Greenwood had yielded 60, Robinson and Higgins failing before him. Vollansi however, stopped the rot making a useful 26, and Shoesmith contributed 18 before Mr Harrison declared.
Dickinson who saved many runs by smart work in the field at cover point, and Tyler. Were the only two of the visitors who gave the Denaby bowlers any trouble. They were the only two excepting Mr extras to reach double figures. Worthington had the remarkably fine average of eight for 34 in 10 overs and Higgins had two for 37.
The averages of the visitors were Tyler two for 64 Rawlins 3 for 54, Bentley 1 for 41 and Poulton 1 for 26
