Bowlers’ Day at Denaby

Denaby 59   Cortonwood  36

IN a match lasting only 34.4 overs at Denaby on Saturday. Denaby and Cadeby beat Cortonwood by 23 runs. It was a bowlers’ day for both sides and only five bowlers were called upon for the two innings.

Denaby were soon in trouble, losing their opening bat, A. Ellis, when only eight runs were on the board. A Jones and P. Downing stuck together to take the score to 43 (with the ample help of “extras”) before Jones was dismissed for 24. Three wickets fell with the score at 43, two with the score at 47, another at 56 and the remainder at 59. Peter Taylor, coming in at second wicket down, stayed to the end and was the last man out for 12 runs. E. Peploe, Cortonwood’s most successful bowler, took five for 18 and P. Wrightson took three for nine.

The Cortonwood innings was a collapse almost from the start. The longest stand (if it can be called by that name) was a fifth wicket stand of eight runs. Seven batsmen returned to, the pavilion without scoring and the highest individual score of the innings was that of A. Pegg who scored 19. Lawley took six for 10 and Newton four for 25.
