The Undoing of Denaby

Denaby and Cadeby 79                  Rotherham Town 86 for 4

Denaby travelled to Rotherham, where for the second time this summer they found the borough’s Yorkshire Council opposed to them. Well and consistently as the villagers have played this season, they once again showed a tendency to fail to “stay the course,” and as defeat was their portion they can now no longer be considered in the light of probable champions. Rotherham’s method of occasionally playing their first team in the Mexborough League, is open to criticism, inasmuch as such action levies an undoubted handicap on the clubs who thusly complement this.

Denaby for instance, have dropped four points to Rotherham’s first string, and this may be set to practically put them out of the running for the honours that so persistently delude their grasp at the last moment, so to speak.

On Saturday Denaby found their opponents a bit too strong to cope with, the home team winning by the handsome margin of six wickets. Denaby batted first, but could do no better than compile an aggregate of 79, scores of 16, 17 and 18 by P Bury, Narroway and A Smith respectively, being the best individual efforts. On Rotherham replying, a brilliant innings by Dyer, who made 53 not out was the chief factor in their convincing victory.

The match was given to Ramsbottom for his benefit. Rotherham people are sorry that next season the club will know him no more.
