First Defeat For Elsecar

Denaby & Cadeby 98   Elsecar 77

Denaby & Cadeby inflicted upon Elsecar their first Yorkshire Council defeat of the thanks mainly to some superb bowling by R. Lawley.

Denaby batted first and with the score at 22-5 it seemed that they would be lucky to reach 50. A stand of 35 for the sixth wicket between A. Hough (17) and R. Cory (27 not out) improved the position, but then four wickets fell quickly, but a last wicket stand of 22 enabled Denaby to reach 98. a score that was thought to be no way near formidable for the strong Elsecar side.

Dick Lawley, backed up by Colin Parker, soon had different ideas and in no time at all Elsecar were reeling at 23 for 5. Then came a stand of 30 between Taylor and Wright but after these two were parted the rest of the side were easy meat for Lawley and Parker and Denaby completed an outstanding victory by 21 runs. Elsecar totalled 77.
