Put In But Soon Out
Denaby Throw Early Wickets Away
Denaby fell easy victims to Scarboro’ in an interesting game at Tickhill Square on Saturday.
Scarboro’ won the toss but decided to give Denaby first knock. The Scarboro’ bowlers were on top from the start and gave Denaby few opportunities to score. E. Wainwright and J. Greenwood opened for the home team but by an unfortunate misunderstanding Greenwood was run out with only two runs to his credit.
There seemed certain to hope of a run. In the same way E. Robinson, who succeeded Greenwood, was dismissed for 7. Neither C. Mountney nor R. Probert stayed long. Mountney hit 2, while Probert was dismissed by J. Temple without scoring. H. Foster was the hero of the Denaby innings and together with W. Criddle made a plucky fifth-wicket stand. Foster played a steady but confident game and despite the tactics of the Scarboro’ bowlers he managed to score a timely 37 not out. The partnership was broken when Criddle was bowled by J. Simpson after making 6.
Foster was joined by G. Allen, who was fortunate in not being caught at an early stage by Adamson, the latter missing a high catch off Mead’s bowling. After 90 minutes the Denaby score stood at 77, most of the runs being scored off J. Temple. Allen went on to score 19, which included four 4’s, before he fell to Temple. Hough, Dickinson and Jeffcote only contributed a single run between them.
Scarboro’ found no difficulty in knocking off the runs and although F. Temple was caught by Allen for 17, J. H. Pearson, the 19-year-old Yorkshire Colt, scored 52 not out. J. A. Richardson was bowled by Mountney for 14, but A. N. Adamson went in to score 14, bringing Scarboro’s total to 99 for 2.
Temple had four Denaby wickets for 19, while Simpson had 3 for 13. Mountney, for Denaby, took 2 for 25.
