Denaby Break New Ground
Withdrawal from South Yorkshire Section
Judging by the amount of work done, and the enthusiasm shown by the members and officials, the coming season should be one of the best the club has experienced since joining the Yorkshire Council. Throughout the close season work has been done voluntarily on the ground by members and this includes the laying of over 1,000 pieces of new turf. The ground is in fine condition.
Two or three seasons ago Mr. Harry Shoosmith who was at one time on the Surrey ground staff, took all the young players in hand and coached them. He has returned to the club willing to give sound advice to those who seek it, but it remains to be seen whether he will himself take part in league games.
The club has withdrawn from the South Yorkshire Section of the Council, but fixtures have been arranged with other Council clubs. New visitors to the ground will be Mitchell Main, Rotherham Town, East Ardsley, Frickley, Rossington, Brodsworth, Firbeck and Bullcroft.
The probable Council players will be W Criddle (captain) who had experience with Bolton on Dearne in their Council days; E. Tibbles (vice-captain), I. Greenwood, E. P. Robinson, E. Wainwright, Richard Probert, A Springthorpe, Sid Wild, Joe Wright, who makes a welcome return to the club after a season’s absence (he scored 724 runs in 1930) G. Allen, a new wicket-keeper from Langwith Colliery in the Bassetlaw league, and J. Richards. The club are hoping to secure the services of a slow left arm bowler of experience whose name is not divulged. It is not yet known whether A. S. Vollans will be able to assist the club owing to his scholastic duties. B. B. Clarkson, last year’s wicket-keeper, has promised to help the club whenever possible. Owing to an injury to his hand Fred Clarkson will be unable to play.
- Wathey, the veteran, is again in charge of the Doncaster league team, with Herbert Foster as his understudy. The Cricket Section will hold their annual cutting to Scarboro’ on August 6th.
