Denaby Defied
Elseear’s 3 Wickets Win

Elsecar 114 for 3 Denaby & Cadeby 110

A fighting innings by 18-years- old Howard Moxon helped push Elsecar’s total on Saturday from three for 30 to three for 114. Partnered by Eric Baldwin, Moxon flayed the Denaby and Cadebv bowling for seven fours in his 52. Baldwin supported him with 33 and both were undefeated.

The visitors, Denaby and Cadeby scored 110 on an easy-paced wicket, Following on, Elsecar were soon in trouble, but with the efforts of Moxon and Baldwin, won by seven wickets.

The Yorkshire Council Feast match- began slowly. The two openers, Ellis and Jones did not attempt many scoring shots, being apparently satisfied to wear down the fast bowler’s-pace. Several chances were missed by the Elsecar fielders.

A confident appeal behind the wicket left wicket-keeper Colin red-faced on one occasion when he failed to hold a snick, and captain Ike Baxter missed a “dolly” at mid-off. However, the pair were dismissed for a total of 44. After a minor collapse Oakley came back to score 25 valuable runs before being l.b.w. to Taylor. The last six batsmen were dismissed for 34 (Clayton took 7 ‘for 30).

On a seemingly lifeless wicket, Elsecar’s chances must have seemed high, but Baxter was bowled by Lawlev for seven, Brian Brook by bowler Newton for two and Doug. Smith by Lawley at 13.

It was then that Howard Moxon, the school captain of Ecclesfield Grammar School came into his own. By patient yet interesting batting, he and Baldwin knocked off the necessary runs.
