Elsecar’s Fine Start Did Not Dismay Very Confident Denaby and Cadeby.
Several causes can be attributed to Elsecar’s surprisingly defeat on Saturday at the hands of Denaby and Cadeby in the Yorkshire Council match held at Elsecar. Probably three points stand out: Elsecar’s inability to hit the ball hard, Denaby’s fine field placing, accurate, consistent bowling by the visitors Oakley and Downing.
Opening, the Elsecar batsmen, Baxter and Kay soon found form and 83 runs were hit in 95 minutes. But when Baxter and Kay were out for 37 and 63 respectively. The following batsmen failed to press home the attack.
Brook was out for us, and Smith and Neville could not get into their stride, however hard they deserved.
With the knowledge that there were plenty of men to follow, and with over hundred runs on the board in any case, it would have been a better policy for them to have open their shoulders and tried to force the ball past the boundary fielders. But they were content to take short singles said. Smith (39) and Neville (15) were both not out.
Congratulations to Oakley and Downing who bowled 20 overs each and succeed in pinning down the Elsecar batting strength.
In their innings, Denaby and Cadeby continues steadily and with no apparent effort passed the Elsecar total of 163 for three declared, with 167 for six wickets.
The first six batsmen were not extended to any degree, and he reached the the 20s, with Cory hitting 31. Clayton had three for 13
