Cardwell’s Feat
Frickley Triumph Over Clock and Denaby
Frickley 242 Denaby & Cadeby 130
A Cookson 42 J Kaye 56, J Boon 46 E Tibbles 35; W Cardwell 5-17
Frickley pulled the game out of the fire to win in magnificent style four minutes from time at South Elmsall.
Left with two hours to play, Denaby contented themselves with playing for time, a policy which irritated the largest crowd seen for some seasons on the ground, and a result of Frickley’s recent brilliant performances. But the Denaby game looked like being successful when only tour batsmen were out with half an hour to play. Greenwood and Tibbles put on 59 in an hour. Greenwood began a run but returned when the ball was quickly thrown back. Dyson caught the hall but missed the bails brat time and knocked them off as his hand descended by which time the batsmen had got beck. The umpire evidently believed the bails were snicked at the first attempt and gave Greenwood out. It was hard luck for Denaby for the two players looked well set.
Tibbles and Wainwright, contenting themselves chiefly with sneaking singles put on 33. Tibbles and Wainwright went out 92, and Wright followed shortly after. With only 30 minutes left and six wickets to fall, the odds were against Frickley. But excitement grew when Boon got the wickets of Robinson and Allen, leaving four to fall in quarter of an hour. Then Cardwell took a hand and got the last four wickets with nine balls without a run being hit off him, to give his team victory with four minutes to spare. It was the cleverest bawling feat seen at Westfield Lane for a long time.
Cardwell’s return for the game was 5 for 17.. Boon took 3 for 30.
Frickley’s 242 was compiled in 140 minutes. Cookson and Kaye scored 105 in partnership. Kaye did some free hitting and his 56 included a six and 8 fours. Boon gave an even more vigorous display. He got his 46 in 24 minutes, hitting 4 sixes and 4 fours. He three times hit the ball out of the ground. Downing was Denaby’s most successful bowler with 4 for 53. Wild took 3 for 61 and Robinson 3 for 89.
