Records At Frickley
Recovery And Collapse
Recovering from an early lapse, Frickley gained an easy victory by 205 runs over Denaby at South Elmsall. Three individual feats played a prominent part in the success, the batting of Dyson and C. Burkinshaw, and the bowling of Tom Smith.
With more than half the Frickley team out for a moderate score an early finish in favour of Denaby seemed probable, but a record eighth wicket partnership of 168 between Dyson and Burkinshaw altered the course of the game.
Losing Smith at 36, and Morris and Ward with only another man on the board, Frickley rallied through Cookson and Dyson. After Cookson’s departure at 78 another collapse followed, Tyrrell leaving with the score unchanged and Taylor and Ogley going for six more runs, had been added. It was then that Dyson and Burkinshaw got together and defied the Denaby bowlers.
After giving a difficult chance at square leg when he had made merely, driving the ball through the pavilion window for one of his boundaries. He hit 2 sixes and 29 fours. Burkinshaw scored even more rapidly, his 93, which included 4 sixes and 15 fours, being made in 50 minutes. Their record stand was ended by J. Wright, who, going on late, took 2 for 16.
How the bowling was punished is shown by the fact that Robinson took his first 2 wickets for 16 runs and then had 49 hit off him without further success. Wainwright had 3 for 41, and Mountney, who at one stage had 3 for 16, finished with 3 for 48.
A sensational collapse resulted in Denaby being dismissed in 75 minutes. They made a better start than Frickley had done, for after Wainwright had been sent back with the score at 14, Robinson and Greenwood added 30 before being parted. Though Ward was troublesome, the score stood at 92 for 4. Then Tom Smith got to work with disastrous results. He had previously taken 1 for 14, but in a deadly spell he claimed three victims in four deliveries without further cost. Ward completed the rout. Taylor made a brilliant one-handed catch near the boundary to dismiss Wright, who had shown resistance, and the consequence was that six wickets fell for only three runs. After making 92 for 4 Denaby were all out for 95. Smith had the splendid return of 4 for 14, and Ward 5 for 52.
