HIT 100 IN 46 MINUTES

Rockingham have “signed” a new slow bowler from Steel, Peech and Tozer, and certainly he made his mark in his first game against Denaby on Saturday, even though only seven wickets fell during the whole of this Yorkshire Council game. It was the batsmen who really shone.

Hallam and Backhouse opened for Rockingham, but with the score at 15 Backhouse was run out. Foster went the same way with only 38 on the board, and then the rate of scoring slowed down. Archie Wootton batted very safely, but was bowled at 27 with the score 87. During all this time Hallam was plodding away, and when Cooke came in at the other end they put on 100 in 46 minutes, with Hallam 88 and Cooke 54 when the required number of overs was up. Rockingham totalled 187 for 3.

Denaby first wicket pair did rather better than the home side. They put on 41 before being parted when Walker was bowled by Goring for 25. New boy, Anderson, got his first victim for Rockingham when he clean bowled Ellis, who had been at the wicket 80 minutes for only 25. Just two overs later, Anderson had the wicket of Oakley for 20, but after this Dodds and Hough put up the “shutters”. They batted steadily on and took the score to 134 when Dodds had no chance with a very well aimed ball by Hitchmough. No more wickets fell and the match ended in a draw.
