Opportune Stand
Robinson Finds His Form
A splendid third-wicket stand of 147 by Ernest Wainwright and Ellis Robinson, who passed the century, enabled Denaby to make a creditable response to Rossington’s total of 272 for 9 wickets at Rossington on Saturday and hold the home side to a draw.
Rossington batted practically 2½ hours for their runs. Widdowson hit 12 fours in his 75, Barrett had 4 fours and two sixes in his 69, and Harkin, Clarkson and Chivers also helped themselves to useful scores, and the Denaby bowlers had a disheartening afternoon, Mountney coming out with the best figures, 4 for 71. Denaby had no hope of getting the runs with only a few minutes over two hours batting time, but when Irving Greenwood went for a “duck” with only two runs on the board and Wright suffered the same fate without a run being added it looked as though Rossington might force a win. Robinson and Wainwright mastered the attack, however, and when Wainwright was bowled by Blount the total was 149. Wainwright batted an hour and three-quarters for his 62 runs and hit 10 fours. Robinson, whose 117 not out was his best score of the season and came at the time when it was most needed, was at the wicket for nearly two hours and hit 11 fours and three sixes. Foster helped to take the score to 202 for 3 wickets. Blount had 3 for 47 for Rossington. Scores:
