Batsmen’s revels.
Swinton 161 for 3 Denaby 92
Persisting in their policy of “giving the youngsters a chance” in the evening league competition, Denaby received a further trouncing at Swinton on Monday. Not a single regular member of the Yorkshire Council side was in the Denaby team, and the bowling and fielding were so far below Swinton standards that the batsmen had a happy time.
There were shocks at the start, Parking and Price going for seven runs, but Burkinshaw quickly hit up a characteristic half century in a productive partnership with Adey. Denton followed to score even more quickly off the weary bowling and his 52 were got in 25 minutes, 36 of them by boundary strokes. Swinton’s rate of scoring was just over two runs a minute and in the innings was much polished batting.
The Denaby youngsters found as much as they could do to keep their wickets standing and only 30 odd runs were managed in three quarters of an hour. Then a good effort by Bob Patterson lifted the standard of batting to save Denaby from a properr rout. Denaby’s Colts all show the potentialities of expertly trained players, but they are hardly ripe enough yet for coping with Yorkshire Council bowling and fielding, some of these lads have distinct promise and the match practice thus obtained will do them no harm. Still, to include a 14-year-old is turning the business into something very near a joke. Harker,Swinton’s new right arm fast bowler, was given a spell extending over everyone playing, finishing with five wickets for 39. Goddard got four for 41 – and should have had a better return with a little more elasticity in the fieldsman at the back of the wicket. He also ran out Foster very smartly, and sustained his reputation as probably the best fielder in the district
