Denaby and Cadeby United v. White Lane

In this match, at Denaby, on Saturday, the home team had hopes of securing their first victory, but were doomed to disappointment, suffering defeat by one wicket after a splendidly contested game.

Batting first, Denaby made a fair start, all the first four men contributing double figures, W. Robinson, with 25, being top scorer, but the later batsmen failed to make anything of a show against the trundling of E. Platts and Mallinson, the side which batted a man short, being dismissed for 87 runs. Mallinson, with three wickets for nine runs, and E. Platts, three for 20, were the most successful bowlers, but the White Lane attack was very good throughout.

On White Lane starting on their task of knocking up 88 runs for victory, a good start was made, J. Norbron and W. Chambery putting up 24 for the first wicket, at which total both batsmen were dismissed. Then came a long and stern struggle for supremacy, first one side and then the other having the advantage. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and when the last two men got together, White Lane required 14 runs, which were hit off amid much excitement, the visitors winning a highly creditable victory.

J. Barraclough hit well for 12, and each batsman contributed a few runs. The stand of J. Mellor and A. Chambers at the end giving White Lane a valuable brace of league points.

For Denaby, both bowlers did well, Tiddily taking five wickets for 18 runs. The fielding on both sides was rather erratic, and “Mr. Extras” contributed more than usual to the totals of the respective sides.
