Big Upton Stand

Upton followed up their win over Bullcroft on Saturday by a four wickets win over Denaby at Upton on Monday. The Upton batting, though somewhat weakened by the departure of J. Seagrave and J. Johnson for football duties, proved much too good for the Denaby bowling, also weakened by the absence of Ellis Robinson.

Denaby had two wickets down for only eight runs. J. Smith and E. Wainwright improved the position, but it was not until R. Probert and J. A. Robinson made a stand of 47 for the seventh wicket that the Denaby total became anything like adequate. They took the score to 123 for 7, and the remaining wickets fell rather cheaply. A strong wind was troublesome and Denaby’s 160 was completed in just two hours. The total included 32 extras. E. Humphrey had 4 for 43 and F. Hague 3 for 47 for Upton.

Upton also made a poor start but F. Hague and J. W. Smith took the score to 114 for 3 in a partnership of 83 runs which was broken when Hague was caught by Hough off J. Smith’s first ball. Hague’s 56 included six fours. W. T. Smith hit out and met with success, being unbeaten for 30 runs. The best Denaby bowler was C. Mountney (3 for 53). Scores:—
