Surprise Packet at Wombwell

The Denaby team created as big a surprise on Saturday as there has been all the season. For nearly four long months the Wombwell brigade has been boasting of the absence of defeat, and glorifying over their many successes.

It is a long lane which has no turning, and it was a bad corner which Wombwell turned on Saturday. It was most discomforting. To be robbed of two points just when they are most wanted—and, moreover, most expected—proved a big thorn in the side of the Wombwell Main contingent.

What a disaster it was! Just look at the figures: Denaby 145, Wombwell 55. What a surprise it was for Wombwell supporters to gloat over during the weekend.

Maybe it was their reward for playing Herbert White—an ineligible man, although the wonderful brain power brought to bear by the Mexboro’ League executive deemed him to be eligible. Denaby won on their merits, and they are to be congratulated on their big achievement.
