Denaby Case Dismissed

Inspector’s Call at Co-operative Stores

Four summonses against the Denaby Main Industrial Society Ltd., for exposing bags of sugar for sale which were not of the weight stated, were dismissed on payment of costs by the Doncaster West Riding magistrates on Tuesday.

For the prosecution Mr. R. C. Linsey said an inspector called at a branch shop the Society and found deficiencies when checking bags of sugar.

An Inspector, Mr. Hutchinson, giving evidence, said that out of 33 three-pound bags of sugar 18 were deficient in weight, the total deficiency being 5 oz. 5 drams. Twenty out of 22 bags of 1 ½ lbs were found to have a total deficiency of 14 oz 12 drams. and six 2 ½ lb. bags had a total deficiency of 2 ozs. 5 ½ drams.

For the defence, Mr. D. Dunn said that the manager was busy dealing with extra supplies of Christmas goods and the bags had to be filled by an errand boy. The manager did not have the time to check the bags, before they were put up for sale. The total deficiency in cash would only be sixpence.
