Denaby Colliers’ Brutal Assault
On Saturday, at Doncaster, George William De Laney and Oscar Brindley, colliers, Denaby, were summoned for assaulting Emma Jane Whalley, at the same time and place. John Moore, also a collier of Denaby.
Defendants had been lodging at Moore’s house, and on Tuesday last, between half-past ten and eleven at night, they went to his house. Mrs. Moore opened the door, and both defendants went in.
They had been refused admittance on the previous night because they had not paid for their lodgings. De Laney locked the door and said they were going to have their clothes. Brindley offered Mrs. Moore 3s.
Moore prevented defendants from going upstairs. Defendants assaulted Moore and his wife. A neighbour named Mrs. Whalley and other complainant came in.
De Laney struck her, blacked both her eyes, and broke several of her teeth.
De Laney was committed to prison for three months with hard labour, and the other defendant was fined 40s. and 21s. costs.
