A Denaby Collier’s Weakness.
At the Sheffield Police Court on Monday, before the Stipendiary, Edward Higgins (22), a miner, of Main road, Denaby, was charged with attempting to commit suicide. The defendant paid a visit to some friends at Sheffield. He had some drink, and afterwards tied a handkerchief round his neck, with the intention, it was stated, of strangling himself. He was taken into custody by P.C. Wood at 7, Court 5, House, Bailey street.
The defendant’s aunt said his wife was burnt to death some time ago, and that had preyed on his mind.
The defendant added that he did not know what he was doing at the time. He had had a bit of trouble; but he would now be “straight.”
He was ordered to report himself to the Court on Monday next.
