Denaby Couple Gaoled for Child Neglect

Despite five visits by an N.S.P.C.C. inspector to a Denaby home this year, conditions deteriorated resulting in two children being taken to place of safety, and their parents appearing before Doncaster West Riding Magistrates on Friday.

They were told by the Chairman (Mr. A, E. Emberton), “These are very grave offences against very little children and we are bound to take a serious view. The conditions under which they have been living are revolting.”

The parents, Ivy Pennington (23) and Ronald Pennington (29) canal boatman, of Braithwell Street, Denaby, were each sent to prison for three months for neglecting their children. Timothy (seven months and Ronald (2). Mrs. Pennigton pleaded guilty to this and another offence of neglecting the youngest child on January 6th.  Her husband pleaded not guilty.
