DENABY DRIVER KILLED

A Denaby youth was killed and two others injured on Tickhill Road, Maltby, late on Tuesday night. The dead youth was Peter Whitaker, 18, of 4 George Street.

The passengers in the car were David Prendergast of 17 Maple Grove, Conisbrough and Terence Clarke of 18 Beech Road Mexborough.  They were both taken to Rotherham hospital and detained. On Wednesday Prendergast was said to be fairly comfortable and Clarke’s condition was given as fairly poorly.

Maltby police said that no other vehicle had been involved in the accident. Peter Whitaker, who lived with his parents Mr and Mrs Albert Whitaker in their NCB owned house, was employed as a haulage hand at Denaby main colliery.  He has worked there since he had left Pope Plus X School, Wath at the age of 15.

Previously he attended at St Albans School, Denaby where he played for the school team. Peter,  whose father works at ESC Works at Tinsley Park had been on the day shift at the colliery and is understood to have gone out with his friends in his father’S cear on Tuesday evening when the accident happened..
