Denaby Flower Queen

Yesterday’s School Ceremony

When, after crowning the flower queen of Denaby Main Infants’ School yesterday, Mrs. C. J. Pickett said that although Denaby was not a beautiful place, there were lovely flowers, and happy children, she was speaking of what she saw during the afternoon’s flower festivities. The school staff, she said, were to be commended for creating such beauty and happiness among those surroundings, and for the pains they had taken in training the children in their singing, dancing, and poetry.

Each class in the school had presented to a large audience some example of their own work—collected poetry, a sort of country dancing which showed a proficiency remarkable for their age, songs, maypole dancing, and an acted version of the “Ten Little N—– Boys”” that brought the house down.

The Flower Queen, seven-years-old Joan Horner, was crowned by Mrs. Pickett, herself a former teacher at the school. Joan was attended by Fred Holland, her consort, Susanne Robinson, her crown bearer, two trumpeters, Cohn Squires and Tony Whiting, and three train-bearers, Brian Oxley, Michael Ford, and Ernest Gibson.

Mary Noble, Betty King, Sandra White, Jean Whitaker, Marjorie Globe, Anne Roberts, Christine Buckley, Jennifer Burdett, Norma Coleflax, Jean Sellers, Muriel Crocock, Barbara Floy, Kathleen Briggs and Winifred Nettleton formed a charming court.
