Denaby Hospital Sunday
Large crowds lined the streets on Sunday when the annual Hospital Demonstration and procession was held. The procession which was headed by the St. John Ambulance Brigade band, consisted of scholars from Church of England, Catholic Wesleyan, Primitive and Salvation Army Sunday Schools, Denaby Scouts, Church Lads’ Brigade, Trades organisations, the Fire Brigade, Cadeby Y.M.A., and Maltby and Dinnington troops of scouts. The procession marched to the Denaby United Football Ground where the demonstration was held.
Among those present were Councillors H. Gomersall, T. Sheppard, J. T. E. Collins, B. Roberts, G. Oldfield, and H. H. Ray. The Rev. S. Powley, vicar of Denaby, led the assembly in prayer, and the Rev. M. Featherstone, of Mexborough, also took part in the service.
Col. A. M. Connell, who presided, said during recent years there had been great alterations at the hospital. A new X-ray apparatus had been bought and other extensions had been built. These alterations had been made possible by the generosity of the Denaby people and the Miners’ Welfare Committee.
Coun. H. Ross (Maltby), said the hospitals did not receive the support that was due to them partly because the people did not really know what the hospitals were doing. No branch of science had made such rapid progress with little recognition of their work as the hospitals. Through the untiring work of doctors and scientists, the child of to-day had a chance of living twelve years longer than its parents.
Mr. Tom Williams, M.P., also spoke on the excellent work done by hospitals. The hospital at Denaby was very well looked after and had the most up-to-date appliances. The Demonstration Committee’s report showed that £50 2s. 10d. was forwarded to the hospital last year. The arrangements were made by Mr. H. Robinson (secretary) and Mr. H. Pearson (president).
