Denaby Main Institute
A very important step is about to be taken in connection with this useful institution. The committee have issued a prospectus, from which we cull the following:—
The committee finding the present premises much too small for the convenience of members have decided to ask the workmen of the district to become proprietary members, viz., to take shares of 10s. each (limited to five shares, one of which is not transferable), for the purpose of furnishing a new institute as under:—
The committee will guarantee 5 per cent. interest per annum on each complete share subscribed, and the shares may be paid in instalments of not less than one shilling. Interest will be paid quarterly, and calculated from the first of the ensuing month after the completion of each share. One share must be fully subscribed by the 1st of July, 1894. The shares will be paid back, if desired, as funds allow.
Applications for shares will close on August 1st, 1894. When £200 is subscribed, application will be made to the Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries, Limited, to build suitable and commodious premises consisting of baths (hot and cold), swimming baths (nominal charge for use), lavatories (hot and cold water), billiard room, refreshment bar, smoke and concert room, reading room, library, gymnasium, committee room, quoits ground, skittle alley, and caretaker’s house.
The Colliery Company desire the building to be managed by a committee of the workmen, to be elected from the proprietary members, and intend only to charge a reasonable rent for their outlay.
It is proposed to supply usual refreshments, and to conduct the premises as a Workman’s Club, where comfortable intercourse and rational recreation can be enjoyed without any inducement being held out to indulge in drink.
We heartily endorse the action of the committee in their efforts to enlarge the work and usefulness of their institute, and wish the scheme every success.
