Denaby Man Blames the Wife

Joseph H. Ball, miner, Denaby, and his wife, were summoned at Doncaster on Tuesday for being drunk and disorderly.

PC Bowden said on February 5 he saw defendant in a Denaby Street quarrelling with his wife. They were both drunk, and surrounded by a crowd.

Ball said that he was in the house asleep, and was awakened by his wife feeling in his pockets for money. She had been out drinking and he had often missed money. He jumped up and hit her, and she shouted “murder.”

Supt. Minty said he had 22 previous convictions.

The chairman (Mr G. B. Shifnal): a disgraceful record.

Defendant: If you apply to the Grenadier Guards you will find a different record.

The chairman said they were going to give him another chance, on the understanding that he kept away from drink. He was fined £1, and his wife, who did not appear, 12s.
