Denaby Men Decide to Resume Work
About 80 colliers and fillers in the Barnsley seem at Denaby mean, refused to go down the pit yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and as a result the management sent home the rest of the men in the seem, which was brought to a complete standstill, with almost 500 men idle.
When the men received their pay cheques in the afternoon they were not satisfied with their pay and they alleged that they were being underpaid. They claim they had several shillings less than they had last week although, they contended, they have filled off as much coal.
At a mass meeting last night, the men twice refused to return to work after votes had been taken. N.U.M. secretary, County Coun. George M. Hanson, Number 3 area agent, Mr Abe Collins, and Yorkshire area compensation agent, Mr J. T. E. Collins, tried for 2 ½ hours to persuade the men to return to work and after the third vote the men agreed to return, pending negotiations.
County Coun. Hanson said after the meeting that the NUM had been negotiating for nearly 6 weeks with the management over a revision of the price list for colliers and fillers. He will negotiate with the management over the price list this afternoon (Friday). About 500 tons of coal have been lost by the dispute.
