Denaby Miners and the Doncaster Corporation
A quarterly meeting of the Doncaster Town Council was held at the Chamber on Wednesday, the Mayor (Councillor Hough) in the chair.
The attention of the Councils drawn by Mr J.F.Clarke to a paragraph which had appeared in a contemporary to the effect that the Guild Hall was refused to the Denaby colliers when application was made for its use by them. He desired to know the reason of this, I should like to hear what Ald Stockil at to say on the matter. So far as he (Mr Clarke) was concerned, he could see no reason why the room should not have been granted at the usual rate.
Nothing disloyal or immeral was to take place, and the dispute was a question of public interest in the borough. The men thought they had been misrepresented, and wanted their view should be made known.
Ald Stockil said he was passing the Guildhall and inspected Taylor called amen, saying the miners wanted the use of the building. He was in favour of the corporation keeping clear of such disputes. If the Hall had been granted it might have been said they were encouraging the men
Mr Bentley agreed with Mr Clarke, said it would be far better if the use of the room had being granted.
The Mayor said the inspector told him that a “person name Chapell” had made the application, and that he said he could demand the use of the room, it being a public place.
The matter was then dropped
