Denaby Miner’s Assault
A Denaby miner named Thomas Westwood was charged with having assaulted P.C. Richards at Denaby the previous day.
At 2.45 in the afternoon the officer was in Annerley Street when the prisoner’s wife came up to him and complained that her husband had run her out of the house with a knife. She asked the officer to go back with her into the house and get the child, as she was afraid he would injure it.
Richards went with her and the prisoner resented his interference, making use of bad language and attacking him. He knocked him down, kicked him, and struck him and bit his finger.
P.C. Haigh corroborated.
The prisoner said the officer wanted to take him to the station without his jacket and waistcoat, and he objected.
The Chairman said the prisoner appeared to have had a quarrel with his wife, and the officer had gone to put things straight, but got kicked and knocked about.
For that he would have to pay £2, including costs, or 14 days.
Prisoner: I will do the 14 days.
