“A Cowardly Assault”
Denaby Miners Attack on Mexborough Man
Exemplary punishment was meted out to 2 Denaby miners at Doncaster on Saturday. The men were Charles William Reed, was summoned for assaulting Albert Madden of Mexborough, and John Mahon, who was accused of aiding and abetting.
Reed, who had a bad record, was sent prison for two months Mahon for a month.
Madden said that on July 14 he was going along Pasture Road, Mexborough in a cart, when he saw two men walking along the road. Reid had a dog with him, and it ran under the horse’s feet, the horse just catching it. Reed went up to him and assaulted him. Mahon holding the horses head to prevent him getting away.
Corroborative evidence was given by John Arnold, 39, Main Street Mexborough, who was with Madden in the cart.
Inspector Varley said that Madden complained to him of the assault, and witness followed by the two defendants in the cart. Reid admitted assault, man said he held horses head while Reid committed the assault. Madden’s face was bruised badly, and without doubt it was a cowardly assault. Both defendants were under the influence of drink.
Reed declared that Madden laughed and jeered at him when the horse kicked the dog and Madden said he held the horse to prevent it going into a ditch.
Mr Mark Nokes (chairman) sentencing the two men, said they would have to be taught that they could not pull up a cart and thrash the owner in this country.
