Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 23 May 1902
All Saints, Brass & Drum & Fife Bands
There were six weddings at All Saints, and most were of an interesting nature, judging by the amount of rice and confetti that could be strewn about the streets.
I expect trader, of the ‘Times” will look for a paragraph about the first public appearance of the Drum and Fife Band, which Mr. Riddle had charge of. Well, they turned out in full force the first time on Sunday, and boldly marched to the service at All Saints. The play of the lads was indeed very creditable, and Mr. Riddle has done well considering the short time be has had the lads under his charge. The side drums were very effective, while the flourish of the sticks by the head drummer was decidedly novel and pleasing. They made tours of the district in Monday and Tuesday, and on Monday alone they had collected nearly £5, which was most encouraging to the lads, of whom good things can be expected in the future.
The Denaby Brass Band took part in a contest at Wombwell last Saturday, with ten other combinations. Although they were unsuccessful, I am informed they gave a most creditable performance. The band has come on a lot since Mr. Augustus Haigh took command, and neighbouring prize bands will have to look to their laurels. I glad to inform readers that Mr. W. Birkin, who met with an accident a fortnight back is recovering as well as can be expected, and it is hoped he will be fit to turn out for Hospital which is next month. He is the previous hon. secretary of that committee, and his services are missed just now.
I have been asked what is to done at Denaby to celebrate the Coronation, but as I am as much in the dark as anybody I cannot say. I have heard of no stir in that direction. It’s high time something was done if we are to do anything at all.
I am sorry to hear of the disposition of Mr. Fisher, the general secretary of the Denaby Cricket Club, the general secretary of the Denaby Cricket Club and a member of the team. I trust to soon hear of his convalescence.
