Denaby Pit Heap is Pictured in Stained Glass Window

The colliery slag heap at Denaby is one of the examples of English landmark pictured in the new stained glass windows recently put into Mexborough Parish Church. These scenes, two others of which are the Dover cliffs, and the Yorkshire hills, are above the eleven panels of four windows in the Lady Chapel.

The artist is a well-known glass painter, Mrs. Rose Everett, of London, and she has executed the work in the mediaeval style. Her subjects are the northern saints, with, above the altar, the Virgin Mary and the patron saint of the church, St. John the Baptist. The rich colouring of the majestic figures of the windows have greatly added to the beauty of the old Parish Church.

The windows have been provided from the estate of the late Mr. John Sutton, in memory of himself and his sister and brothers, Charlotte Elizabeth, George, and Charles William.

The Sutton family worked Manor Farm, next to the church, for over 100 years, arriving in Mexborough just after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815,

Miss Sutton and Mr. John SuttonĀ  were regular attendees and workers at the church, at the time of Canon Bateman, Canon Hope and Dr. Briggs. Vicars of Mexborough.

The dedication ceremony will be carried out during morning service on Sunday, January 15th, by the Archdeacon of Doncaster, the Ven. J. S. Brewis, in the presence of members of the family and friends.
