Denaby Pit Tragedy
William Henry Hancock (24) deputy at the Denaby Colliery, was accidentally killed in the pit yesterday afternoon.
He was operating a jig wheel which was lowering seven full tubs from the coal face down the gate to the level when the prop holding the jig-wheel broke, and a portion of the roof came down and buried him.
One arm and a leg of the man protruded from the debris, and when he was removed, after two hours, he was dead.
