Denaby Res., Montagu Cup Finalists,
Just Made It (4-3) Against Foundry
Queen’s Foundry held Denaby United Reserves to a 4-3 Montagu cup victory in Saturday’s semi-final at Mexborough Hampden Road. United, who are bidding for their second Sheffield Association League championship, are now in the final of the cup tournament they won three seasons ago when they last won the Association League title.
Their Montagu cup final opponents will be Bowbroom or Dearne Athletic; the remaining semi-final, will be played on March 15th.
With a fresh breeze behind them 1 Denaby penned Foundry in their own half for a long spell in the first half, but Richardson and Durose got through a tremendous amount of good work in holding them, and it was 27 minutes before NAYLOR put United ahead. Two minutes later, however, he got through again and converted a pass from Mervyn Law.
Foundry hit back and five minutes from half-time outside-left JOHNSON reduced, the lead, so that at half time United came off with a 2-1 advantage.
See-Saw Fortunes
To the delight of Foundry supporters JOHNSON made it two-all within five minutes of the resumption, but five minutes later FOSTER restored Denaby’s lead with a high shot. It was still very much a seesaw and, allowing Denaby no monopoly of the ball, foundry managed to make it three all via WILLOUGHBY, while United were playing with 10 men in the temporary absence through injury of inside left Jowitt.
Several offside decisions held up foundry attacks in the later stages of the game and the winner, when it came in the sense as minute, fell to BLOOD, the United leader.
