Cricket, Bowls and Tennis Flourishing

A Prosperous Season

The annual tea and prize distribution of the Denaby and Cadeby Cricket, Tennis, and Bowls Club was held last night in the Welfare Institute, Mr. E. Robinson presiding.

The chairman said he had been attending this gathering for 36 years, and was glad to see a new spirit in the club.

Mr. F. Waring (secretary) reported a “wonderful season.” The cricket team finished third in the Yorkshire Council, with 14 matches won, three lost, and five drawn. The Doncaster League team had not been so successful, but were fostering some promising players. The tennis section won the men’s championship of the Mexborough League, and the bowls section won the Rotherham League championship. The cricket “gates” had been doubled and their debt reduced by £78.

Presenting the prizes, Mr. L. C. Hodges, managing director of the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, said he hoped for improvement in the local industrial situation, but at present the hope had not actually materialised.

The following were the prize-winners:

Cricket

  • First team batting: Joe Wright.
  • First team bowling: R. Probert.
  • Second team batting: A. B. Hough.
  • Second team bowling: E. S. Wathey.
  • Special prize for club record (60 wickets in a Yorkshire Council season): E. P. Robinson.

Bowls

Mr. P. Phillips, who has captained the Denaby bowls team for fourteen years, received the Rotherham League championship cup on behalf of the team, and individual members received cases of cutlery as follows:

P. Phillips (senr.), A. Holland, R. Pritchard, J. White, P. H. Phillips (junr.), H. Madin, J. Madin, R. Vine, R. Allport, and L. Rigby.

The Denaby Welfare Ladies’ Bowls Cup and the Fullerton Hospital Ladies’ Bowls Cup were presented to the Buxton Arms team, Goldthorpe.

Tennis

Mr. E. Swift, the tennis captain, reported that both first and second teams (Mexborough League) had gone through the last two seasons without losing a match.

A vote of thanks to Mr. Hodges was proposed by Councillor T. Morgan and seconded by Mr. E. Wainwright, cricket vice-captain.
