Denaby Striker’s Affairs

Another case which came before His Honour was an application made by Harry Stevenson, of 8, Stratford Terrace, Denaby, now a miner employed at the Cadeby Main Colliery, for an administration order.

His debts amounted to £33 16s. 11d., and of this sum £10 4s. 1d. was due to the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Co., Limited. His wages were 25s. per week, and he had two sons earning 25s. per week. He offered to pay 5s. in the £ per month.

Mr. Gichard, who opposed on behalf of the Colliery Co., elicited from the applicant that he was one of the men who had been out of work during the strike at Denaby Colliery. He denied at first that he got into debt during that period, but admitted afterwards that he had failed to pay his rent, and that the colliery had made a claim against him for arrears.

Further, he had been ordered in the police court to pay damages for a breach of contract. The colliery company had offered to take the amount by instalments.
