Denaby Supporters Cup Final
Hard Fought

Conisborough Middle School 1, Denaby St Albans 1

The final at Denaby on Friday night was a sterling game which ended in a draw after extra time. The displays of the two teams were hardly as good as those of the previous night at Mexborough. But in the whole, seeing that the two respective centre half played that night, the game was interesting. With the exception of Harris, the Conisborough Middle School centre half, who was informed after the match that he had to attend Dinnington for the county match, the most outstanding players were the goalkeepers. Rush (Denaby) and Whitehead (Conisborough), and J Ward (Denaby). It was wonderful to see which get some of the high shots. Both defences played with a perfect understanding. Harris played a fine, plucky game, but little advantage was taken of his passage down the middle. James Ward was one of the most elusive forwards on the field.

Early Lead.

Soon after the start Conisbrough took their lead. Harris won the ball over to the left to Shephard, who quickly drop the ball into the middle of the goalmouth. Rush misjudging the flight, Warren, standing uncovered, making no mistake with a high shot. Gradually the Conisborough forwards began to get the upper hand of the Denaby backs, but they repeatedly failed to get the ball past rush, time after time Harris set his forwards going, but they failed to put on the finishing touch. The centre half went near the mark with one shot. Only to encounter rush the Denaby forwards attacked spasmodically and when they did Whitehead had his work cut out. The interval arrived with Conisborough being rather lucky to have obtained their goal.

On resuming there appeared to be a complete change in the game. It was Denaby who did all the attacking and for more than 10 minutes they were pressing with only Rush to hold the fort. Then followed a great duel between Harris, Madin and Ward. Harris did more than his share of work, but finally was evaded by the trickiness of Ward, who took advantage of fine made into send the ball into the net well out of Whitehead’s reach.

During the extra time Harris presented Baker with a glorious chance. The Denaby defence were well up the field when Baker was placed in possession and the full-back-cum-forward had only to walk the ball through, but he touched the ball a bit too hard in rush came running out to win the race. That was the only chance there was and the game ended in a draw.
