A Disastrous Day
Denaby United 10, Wombwell 2
Not for many years have Denaby scored so freely as they did at the expense of Wombwell on Saturday. It was altogether a day of disaster for Wombwell. In the first place only half the players were present at the time fixed for the hick-off.
The others arrived several minutes late but it was still impossible to make a start as the players were without their kit. This arrived later still, the men bringing it having been let down by the, ‘bus ordered, missed another ‘bus, missed a train, and eventually caught a ‘bus which further delayed them by turning into the depot at Mexboro’ to refill with petrol.
The game started at six minutes past three, 21 minutes after the advertised time.
Under these circumstances it was hardly surprising that Wombwell went down badly. The young players in the side found the going terribly heavy, and as the late start necessitated the interval being dispensed with they could not hold the better trained Denaby men in the second half. In the first half Wombwell did quite well, though they were on the defensive for the most part and the only goals were scored by ADAMS who had an easy chance after Ward had beaten out a header from Walker, and and WALKER who burst between the Wombwell backs on his own.
Jones showed some clever touches, and Briggs was fast and determined, but undoubtedly Wombwell’s best player was Clegg, the former Denaby halfback. His ball control was good, but the way in which he feinted and tricked King several times in midfield was even better. He fed the forwards quite well in the first half but they rarely responded and single-handed he could do little to check the second half collapse. Of the forwards, Thackray was the best though Wally Brayshaw was always trying to get the line moving.
All the Denaby forwards with the section of Hagaar, scored, and the left winger should have had a couple of goals if he had taken his chances. ADAMS (picture) scored a hat-trick in the second half, as also did WALKER, each player thus bringing his total for the match to four. The other goals were scored by BLACK, who headed in a centre’ from Hagger, and SIDDALL who converted is penalty for a foul on himself. T. FISHER scored both Wombwell’s goals.
Barrow was unfortunate not to score for he had several mod shots blocked and one of the goals credited to Walker in the second off was, the result of a hard shot from the half-back which Ward could not hold. L. Smith again proved a capable deputy for Matt. Taylor.’ down. with ‘flu, and Gale made some clever saves when Wombwell made a few belated aids in the gathering gloom near the end.
The Denaby forwards did almost as they liked in the second half and Adams again demonstrated his shooting power, Walker also showing ability to finish thoughtful midfield play. Siddall and Black were as good as ever on the wings and Black was in one of his most elusive moods.
