Another Benefit Match.
Another benefit match was played at Denaby, Barker, the professional, being the beneficiary. Rawmarsh, the team of inconsistency, who, at the beginning of the season were thought of as probable champions, but who have failed lamentably in recent matches, were Denaby’s opponents.
Denaby’s true batting form was exhibited. Luther Robinson rattled up 50 not out, and that useful left-hand, Joe Stott, scored 44. P. Bury, who has had a lot of bad luck lately, scored 21, and the sniper, Knowles, 22 not out. Needless to say the Rawmarsh bowling was sadly deficient.
After declaring with 191 runs scored for six wickets, Denaby were bent on a victory. They realised the importance of points with the championship in such an acute state. Rawmarsh played their proper game, and they endeavoured to make a draw, and the scoring naturally became very slow.
In the end Denaby triumphed. A decision, in which Allott was given out lbw., and which decided the match in the last minute, proved very unpalatable to the Rawmarsh players. These bad decisions are really becoming unbearable, and I am told this decision was a “rank bad one.”
