Denaby United 3 Mexborough Town 0
The meeting of these keen local rivals Denaby yesterday produced remarkable enthusiasm, and a gate of fully 4,000 spectators. Both teams put up capital display, each in tum exerting severe Once in a while pressure, only to find superb defence.
The first half was goalless, though not without sensational incident. Denaby led off with lot of clever aggressive work, which served only to bring out the fine defensive resources of Whitham, Birch, and Clarke, who did many smart things. Then came a lengthened Mexborough ascendancy, but the Denaby rear members were their best behaviour.
Once Gadsby, from an offside position, ran through and netted. Restarting, Mexborough were quickly attacking, but after ten minutes, Denaby took control the game, and ran clean away, Radley first getting through with a beautiful goal, well worked for, and cleverly scored. Frost quickly added a second, and Radley put on the third. The visitors, however, came strongly to severely test the Denaby defence, Hancock twice bringing off extremely clever saves.
Result: Denaby United 3 goals. Mexborough Town 0 goal.
