The Bigger They Come .
The Harder They Fall at Denaby
Denaby United 4 Wisbech Town 2
Although they never appeared as polished as their opponents, Denaby United, bottom of the Midland League, beat Wisbech Town, third in the league, 4-2 in their match at Denaby on Monday evening.
Wisbech had many more chances and, in the second half, much more of the play, but they did not take their chances as did the Denaby forwards. The visiting side gave a display of fast, clever midfield play, but were weak in shooting.
Goalkeeper Smithurst excelled himself and undoubtedly went a long way in ensuring a Denaby victory.
Wisbech deservedly took the lead after 21 minutes when left half MOSS scored. His header, from a, centre, was well placed and expertly timed, giving Smethurst no chance to save.
Only two minutes later, against the run of play. Denaby equalised when JOWETT, on the left wing, almost rolled the ball into the net. The past several players and the unsuspecting Wisbech goalkeeper Goodman.
Denaby certainly deserved their second goal however, scored after 30 minutes. Ball was passed out to the wing and WOODGER, Denaby’s outside right, standing only a few yards wide of the goal and few yards out, hit the ball hard and fast onto the inside of the crossbar with which when she flashed into the net to put Denaby ahead.
At half-time they were still leading 2-1
In the first ten minutes of the second half Wisbech began to force the pace, to such an extent that their goalkeeper did not touch the ball in that time. After 63 minutes Denaby went further ahead, although they had the ball in the Wisbech half for only a few minutes. In the breakaway Denaby, forced a corner from which inside right LEE scored.
Following a goalmouth melee SOUTHALL shot from among crowd of players and gave Denaby a 4-1 lead. Only two minutes from time Wisbech got what seemed “consolation” goal when PYE scored.
