Worksop Town 4  Denaby United 1

The Denaby team paid a visit to Worksop on Saturday, to play their fifth match in the Midland league. The weather was beautifully fine, and there were about 800 spectators present. The teams lined up before Mr F Bye, the referee, in the following order:

Worksop: Gosney, goal; Coal and Beale backs; Ashton, Turner and Harrison halfbacks; Copestake, Richardson, Hutton, Reid and Hall, forwards.

Denaby: Tayles, goal; Dudhill and Lawley, backs; Street, Chatfield and Sheldrake, halfback; Lindley, Ryans, McNeil, Roper and Hardy, forwards.

The visitors won the toss. Worksop immediately assumed the aggressive, and Beale got in a long dropping shot, which was only a few inches wide of the mark. After a fruitless corner, Copestake swung the ball across and Hutton rushed up and scored for Worksop with a beautiful header header.

Denaby broke away, and mainly put over the line after final numbers Ryans. Hall, at the other end was applauded for a fine individual effort. The same player centred again nicely to Hutton, who tipped across to Copestake, but the latter’s final effort was a trifle wise. Worksop were having much the best of the play, and Richardson put in a beautiful screw shot, which Tayles just managed to save by tipping over the bar.

Another scrimmage in the visitor’s goal resulted in a corner. This was dropped nicely in front of goal, and Reid found the net was a good header high up.

The visitors now woke up somewhat, and McNeil forced a corner but nothing came of it. Immediately afterwards however, the visiting forwards came again and called missed his kick letting Ryans, who scored.

Half-time arrived with the score: Worksop two goals, Denaby one.

On resuming Denaby became first aggressive, and played up much better than before. Lindley tied a long shot, which landed on the top of the net.

At the other end Hutton sent in a fast low shot, which Tayles had little difficulty in clearing. Worksop went across and Hutton passed to Copestake, who in turn passed to Richardson and the latter quickly converted with a fast stop shot which gave Tayles no chance whatever. The game hereabouts was unnecessarily rough.

Some pretty work was seen in midfield, between Harrison and Turner, as a rough result of which the last name beat Tayles with a low shot.

Denaby played up and Gosney just managed to hook the ball out after a desperate scrimmage in his goal. Play from this point to the close was of the straggling character, and the end came.
