Useful Balance
Denaby’s Satisfactory Season
Valuable Transfer Fee
As forecast in the “South Yorkshire Times” last week, a successful year of progress was reported at the annual meeting of the Denaby United F.C. on Sunday. Mr. Ben Kelly presided over a small attendance.
Mr. A. Davis, the financial secretary, stated that they began the year with £15 8s. 8d. in hand and ended with a balance of £71 6s. 5d. The total income was £2,512 4s. 4d., which included gate receipts (Midland League £467 6s. 8d., English Cup £185 3s., Sheffield Challenge Cup £52 5s.), £704 14s. 3d., five per cent share of “gates” from other clubs, £23 16s. 2d., subscriptions £54 1s. 3d., workers’ contributions £375, transfer fee from Grimsby £325.
The expenditure was £1,440 17s. 1d., including wages £971 0s. 2d., five per cent “gate” share to other clubs £14 15s. 7d., English Cup “gates” percentage to other clubs £52 16s. 9d., compensations £61 2s. 6d., tackle, etc., £49 4s. 1d., entertainment tax £114 2s. 6d. In reply to a question referring to £61 2s. 6d. compensation to players, it was stated that the club compensated any of their players who got injured until they were fit.
In his report, Mr. Percy Harrison, the secretary-manager, said, “We began the season with 15 professionals, the nucleus of a good team, and were holding our own when Adams was injured on November 4th. Then followed injuries to Siddall and McLean at Christmas and King in February, which completely disorganised the team. We have tried no less than nine centre-forwards without finding a suitable one.
On October 28th we transferred T. Hinchliffe to Grimsby after he played in two Midland League games and three English Cup ties for us. We are at present tenth in the Midland League with 29 points from 29 matches. We have gained 12 points from 14 away games, which is very satisfactory considering the league strength.
We made an early exit from the English Cup, Rawmarsh defeating us on their own ground after drawing at Denaby, after we had beaten Mexboro, Thurnscoe and Guisley.”
The chief goalscorers were Siddall (15), Haggar, McLean and Mugglestone (7 each), Potter and Fitzgerald (5 each), Hinchliffe, Armand and Huck (3 each). Siddall and King had made welcome re-appearances, but McLean recovered from injury only to enter hospital for a serious operation, while Adams had been operated upon for knee trouble.
The election of officials aroused a little interest. Mr. Harrison had an opponent in Mr. R. H. Shepherd but the former was again re-elected, along with Mr. A. H. Davis as financial secretary. Mr. L. C. Hodges was re-elected president.
The following were elected to the committee: Messrs. J. Humphries, H. Humphries, E. Walker, Rob. Shepherd, C. Sanderson, J. F. Lewis, A. Hough, J. Denman, W. Hingey, S. Cope, J. Wright, T. Kelly, E. Hadfield, A. Harrison, W. Linstead, A. Senior, Rich. Shepherd, E. Tibbles, W. Prendergast, W. Moseley, J. McDonald, J. W. Darley, B. Kelly, A. Hooley, J. Sutton, G. Harrison, J. Carter, A. Westlake senr., A. Westlake junr., J. Haggar, J. Sabin, A. Race, S. Warren, F. Waring and S. Straw.
After a long discussion the question of running a second team was left to the committee.
Letters of thanks are to be sent to Dr. McArthur (hon. club surgeon), the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Company, Denaby and Cadeby Y.M.A. branches, the Supporters’ Club, and Mrs. Buckley.
A vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, secretary-manager and financial secretary.
The collection on behalf of G. Adams and J. McLean realised £17 6s. 6d., and this was increased by a donation from the Supporters’ Club and the players.
