Late Goals Upset Denaby at Bradford
Earnshaws Part
Bradford City Reserves 8, Denaby United 3
Denaby got a shock when they visited Valley Parade and lost by such a margin, but no one could have grumbled had the home team scored double figures. They probably would have done but for the magnificent display of Earnshaw. The Denaby goalkeeper was easily the most outstanding player in the field.
Bradford easily played the better football and fully deserved to win. Warhurst had more to do in the second half then he had in the first. Horton, a young promising right back, stood out on his own defence and was more reliable than his partner, Scott. Horton played with coolness, and his kicking and tackling earned him praise.
Had the Denaby forwards fed their right wing more there might have been a different result, for Fearnley always had Scott beaten.
Peachy (Bradford), in the middle lane, was a tower of strength and seldom did he allow Wright to go through. Clark has improved by leaps and bounds since he left Broomhill about two seasons ago, but he still seems to overrun the ball. There were times when he was helping Wilson out of difficulties instead of snapping up the passes from Embleton. Embleton was the brains of the attack but unfortunately he failed to score.
“Impossible”
Kelly, the ex-Barnsley centre forward, never made any serious effort unless the ball was placed at his feet, and there were times when a little spurt might have resulted in a shot at Earnshaw. Murphy, like Embleton, put in some good work at inside left. Ormany was very tricky with his footwork, but his shots were useless.
Earnshaw alone prevented a heavy defeat. He stop shots that appeared “impossible.” Happs did more than his share of work. Sykes did not play as well as he did the previous week; his kicking was not too sure, luckily he was well backed by Happs and Medlicott. Beadman was the pick of the wing halves. Little was seen of Denaby’s inside men. The other three were always dangerous, but they were neglected, and as a result goals failed to come Denaby’s way.
Denaby won the toss but this was not to their advantage, for the home team had the better of the opening exchanges, Murphy headed a centre from Dalton over the bar, while Earnshaw fisted out a close range shot from Embleton. Eventually Denaby managed to break away, but Wright shop high over the bar. Bradford then forced two corners which were cleared, then Sykes sent out a long swinging pass to Guest, who closed in and shot stronger. Warhurst turned the ball onto the post for Scott to clear from the rebound.
Bradford fought back and Embleton found Clark with a well judged pass and the little winger tricked Neil and Medlicott before passing inside to Kelly, who shot into the far corner of the net. The Denaby goal was under constant pressure and Bradford went further ahead when Murphy, obtaining possession from a win near the goal, advanced the few yards and scored with a brilliant crusher that had Earnshaw beaten all the way.
Fearnley, who had done some good work on the Denaby right, received a pass from Wright, and went on to beat Scott from his well-placed centre. Fleetwood found the net for the first time since December 28. Warhurst partly saves Fearnley’s shot but Fleetwood met the rebound.
The Better Side.
On resuming Bradford were the better side and within seven minutes increased their lead. Clark forced a corner and place the ball splendidly. Ensure fisted the ball out and it fell at the feet of Ormandy, who scored. Clark got through again to force another corner, and after several shots had been charged down Wilson added the fourth goal. Following a combined left wing movement Murphy added another. Two minutes later Murphy was fouled in the penalty area and from the results spot kick Kelly scored the fifth goal, and got another from Peachey’s centre. Still, with seven goals scored against them, Denaby were not downhearted, and the game took a surprising turn for Wright scored two good goals in as many minutes, but before the end Kelly registered his fourth goal.
