Denaby Suffer At The Seaside
Bridlington Town 4, Denaby United
Although Denaby United conceded only one goal during the first half of their away match at Bridlington on Saturday, they lost 4-1 with the wind behind them in the second half to 1967 Yorkshire League champions Bridlington Town.
After a road accident between two cars held up the journey to Bridlington, United were one down after 20 minutes when Bridlington’s centre forward scored from a cross by the right winger. Appeals for offside were unsuccessful and United were pressed back into the game.
Gilbert had a good chance to score just before half-time, but put the shot wide.
United showed more signs of form in the second half and after Roddis pushed a long ball into the goalmouth, a bad back pass from the Bridlington right half scored an own goal
With Parker slowed down by an injury in the first half, Bridlington fought back with three breakaways after the own goal. Through faulty goal player, poor marking and an acute angle shot from the Bridlington inside right, the home team were easy winners.
Bridlington, playing a crucial match on their way to League honours, met a United site tired from their three Easter matches against Mexborough and Wombwell.
Denaby’s team was:
Pitman; wiggles, Caunt; Pettit, Parker, Whitehead; Gilbert, Royston, Bowden, Whittaker and Roddis.
