Denaby’s “Foreign Misfortunes”
Burton Take the Points

Burton Town 4, Denaby 1

Denaby visited Burton on Saturday in a rearranged fixture, originally fixed for January 25, and cancelled owing to the ground being icebound. Denaby have experienced a lean time on foreign grounds just lately, but on Saturday should have one. Burton Town, newcomers to the league, have an experienced side and play good football. Wilkinson, in goal, had not such a quiet afternoon as the score suggests. Birch and Williams (the former making a reappearance after being on the injured list) were rather shaky under pressure. Smith was the pick of the halfbacks. He was all over the field in the first half, but in the second had to be content in keeping close to the heels of Wright. The forwards combined well together and continually kept the Denaby defence on the alert. Marshment made great use of the many chances put at his feet by Loftus, who worked hard.

Brilliance of Earnshaw

Only the brilliance of Earnshaw saved Denaby once again from a heavy defeat. Sykes played his usual game. Fearnley made some good runs, but Fleetwood was the “star” of the attack and Wright was ever dangerous. Proctor, who came in at outside left in place of Guest, did all that was asked of him in the first half, but was neglected in the second.

The game open sensationally. In less then 30 seconds the home team were one up. Marshment gave the ball to Loftus who passed to Brown. The left ball dribbled forward before giving the ball back to Marshment, who went through to score, much to the bewilderment of the Denaby players. This was followed by a counter raid by Denaby in which Fleetwood was robbed by Smith. The next incident of note was a clever move by Bowater on the home right, which resulted in Halliday forcing a corner. Burton forced a corner on the other side and from this Tranter came within an ace of scoring with a hard shot.

Denaby equalised after 10 minutes. Bark and Proctor started the movement and several opportunities to break down the attack were allowed to slip. The most disastrous of these was when Smith failed to clear as it came from Proctor, and Fearnley seized the opportunity, beating Wilkinson from close range.

Then Burton regained the lead. Marshment took a pass from behind and was going through with Sykes close to his heels, when Sykes slipped and brought the centre forward down in the penalty area. From the results spot kick Marshment scored with a shot that just scraped inside the post.

Not Maintained

Denaby made some moves but were unable to maintain them to the same extent as Burton. Denaby forced the play to the home end, but took a long time to try a shot, and when Beadman did send the ball into the middle, Wilkinson made light work of the clearance. Then Wright broke through and while Williams appealed for offside Wright went forward to send in a shot that struck Wilkinson on the chest and the bounded safety. Another escape for Burton!

Denaby fought back in fine style and from a freekick they looked dangerous until Loftus intervened and with a long dribble put his forwards on the attack. Crewe made a spectacular move and Earnshaw had to run out to intercept the ball. Denaby put plenty of vigour into their game when Walker, who had been off injured, returned just before the interval, the played up with a good figure.

The home team got going in the second half and Earnshaw had to save from Halliday. Denaby appeared to be more persistent in this half, and firmly missed two good chances through faulty shooting. Bowater and Halliday in turn were useful contributors to Burton attacks, but in both cases the inside men failed to improve on their work.

In the last 10 minutes of the game Burton added two more goals, the scorers being Loftus and Crewe.

The attendance was about 1300 and the gate receipts £54.
