Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 09 September 1912

Castleford’s First Home Victory.

Castleford  3   Denaby  United  0

The first match of the season at Castleford ended in the home team’s favour, although they did not get the honours cheaply, Denaby causing them any amount of anxiety at times.

Neither side was able to pierce the defence in the first half. Ward and Jackson played smartly for their respective sides

On crossing over Longbottom worked his way through and scored, and from this point Denabv seemed to lose heart, with the result that Burnill notched a second. A third goal came Castleford’s way owing to a misunderstanding between the Denaby back, Charles being left with a clear field. Blackburn worked hard for Denaby, but was poorly supported.

Mexborough again Discomfited.

Goole Town  2  Mexborough Town 1

Goole and Mexborough, who were in opposition last Monday, played their return fixture at Goole on Saturday, and again the “Babes’’ won by an odd goal. The victory was well deserved. The game opened quietly, and, generally, the first half’s play was tame.

Just before the interval Robotham saved two great shots from Handley and Fulljames.

All the best football was seen in the second half, and Goole won because they were the better stayers. King opened the scoring late on in this half, and the cheering had not died away when Coates equalised. Mexborough seemed have shot their bolt.

Goole never lost hope, and two minutes off time Huxford made a sparkling run and centre, and Bartlett tapped the ball to King, who put the home lot ahead.
