Denaby’s Good Display at Chesterfield.
Chesterfield 3 Denaby United 2
Denaby United gave their best away display of the season on Wednesday, at Chesterfield. Twice they held the lead, and it was not until the last two minutes that Chesterfield secured the winning goal.
It was Chesterfield’s own fault that they did not get more goals. Their forwards missed easy chances in the opening half, once shooting high over the bar when it seemed impossible to miss the target.
Lovell, the Denaby inside right opened the scoring three minutes after the start. Cheshire equalised from a penalty taken by Irvine. Lovell again put United ahead, whilst 10 minutes from half-time Butterell equalised.
The second half Chesterfield play with the wind and rain at their backs, although they kept Denaby on the defence all the time, it was not until the last 10 minutes that they cause serious trouble.
There was great excitement Mosley hit the bar and follow this by dropping the ball on top of the bar. It fell close to Abbott who got the winning goal.
Cheshire new goalkeeper, Mitchell, transferred from Coventry City today before, and only one shot to stop in this art. It was a brilliant save. Lovell seen the sentence corner, but Mitchell managed to turn the ball away from the goal.
Lee, a youngster, kept a capital goal for Denaby. The gate receipts were £106.
Beaten At Nottingham.
Mexboro’ Put Up a Good Fight.
Nottingham Forest Reserve 4 Mexborough Town 2
Mexborough were away to Nottingham Forest Reserve, on the City ground, Nottingham, yesterday, in beautitul weather, the “gate” being rather spoiled by the proximity of a local Cup Final. The game was full of incident and was interesting, though the play did not reach a high standard.
The home team proved superior, and won fairly easily, but the Mexborough forwards were hard to shake off and in the second half only hefty tackling and clearances by the backs kept them at bay.
Mexborough won the tree and were the first to attack, through Foxall while Weakley proved slow when Waterfield gave him a chance. Firth missed when close in, and then Carlin saved from both David and Firth. Only nine minutes had elapsed when LITHGOW seized the chance in a scramble under the bar, and opened the scoring.
After the visitors had had a look in from an effort by Reeves, the Forest attack got going again, and the game was twenty minutes’ old when FIRTH rounded Glover and whipped in a low shot. Carlin got down to it, but lost control of the ball, and it slipped in by the post. Mexboro’ were not disheartened, and when Stapleton had to be carried off as a result of a collision, the visitors attacked with renewed vigour, and after Reeves had had hard luck with a great drive, and Matt. Taylor had a free-kick tipped over the bar, Mexborough’s efforts were rewarded end FOXALL headed through.
Half-time Notts Forest Reserve 2. Mexborough 1.
Stapelton reappeared on the resumption. Right from the restart Mexborough showed that they meant business, and it was more by luck than judgement that the home goal survived shots from Reeves and M Taylor.
Mexborough’s efforts then died away for a time and after 17 minutes a Nottingham attack resulted in FIRTH putting Forest further ahead. Reed retaliated with a sparkling shot, which Johnson just tipped over A good run so C. TAYLOR make the most of find chance and scored for Mexborough. Eight minutes from the end LITHGOW scored Forest’s fourth goal.
Hill and M. Taylor did Yeoman service for Mexboro at half beck, and Reed and Fossil were the pick of the visiting forwards.
Mexborough: Carlin; Flynn and Glover; Hill, M. Taylor and C. Taylor; Reeves, Reed, Weakley, Foxall and Waterfield.
Notts Forest Reserve: Johnson; Thompson and Barrett; Lowe, Ashmore and G. Jones; Firth Davis, Lithgow, Donovan and Stapleton.
